Ankle sprains are one of the most common sporting injuries, and many people never fully rehabilitate them. That leaves a stiff, weak ankle that rolls again.

Good rehabilitation restores range, strength and balance, which is what protects the ankle next time.

Practitioner treating a patient’s ankle

Common causes

  • Lateral ligament sprain from rolling the ankle
  • Tendon irritation behind or beside the ankle
  • Stiffness at the ankle and foot that overloads the knee and hip
  • Repeated overload from running or jumping

How we treat it

Treatment includes joint mobilisation, soft tissue therapy and, where suitable, IASTM or dry needling, but the main work is a staged strength, balance and landing program. We will tell you when you can run, jump and cut again.

For field and court sport athletes

We set criteria for return to play, not just a date. That means pain-free movement and enough strength and balance, so you are less likely to roll it again.

What to expect at your first visit

The first appointment is 45 minutes. See what happens at your first visit.

  • A conversation about what happened, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to
  • A hands-on examination of the painful area and the joints and muscles around it
  • A clear explanation of what we find and what we recommend, including how long it may take
  • Treatment at the first visit when it is appropriate, plus exercises to take home
