Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people stop training or miss work. Most episodes are mechanical, meaning they come from how the joints, muscles and discs are loaded, and most improve with the right treatment and movement.

The goal is to work out what is driving your pain, calm it down, and fix what caused it so it is less likely to return.

Patient being assessed for lower back pain

Common causes

  • Joint irritation or stiffness in the lower spine or sacroiliac joint
  • Muscle strain from lifting, twisting or a sudden jump in training
  • Disc irritation, which can refer pain into the buttock or leg
  • Prolonged sitting with little movement
  • Weak hip and trunk muscles that make the back work harder

How we treat it

Treatment is matched to your findings and may include spinal adjustment or mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, dry needling, and a graded exercise program. We give you clear guidance on what to keep doing, so you are not left resting and losing fitness.

For athletes and active people

Rowers, runners, golfers and lifters all load the back differently. We look at your sport, technique and recent training changes, so we treat the cause as well as the pain.
